From Client to Connector: Mil Robinson’s Journey to Giving Back
When Mil Robinson first heard about Servants at Work, he had no idea the ramps SAWs builds would soon become a lifeline—not once, but twice.
Now 75, Mil is a retired insurance executive and trainer. Known for his calm presence and easy conversation, he’s spent a lifetime connecting with people—and today, he continues that work as a Client Services Representative for SAWs. But his journey to this role began on the other end of the phone line. “Mil has been such a joy to work and learn with throughout our time together,” says Cynthia Park, SAWs Client Service Coordinator. “From day one, his enthusiasm, dedication, and genuine passion for supporting SAWs’ mission have been evident in everything he does.”
Nearly two decades ago, a series of health challenges began to affect Mil’s mobility. In 2019, worsening circulation in his legs—likely related to diabetes—led to his first leg amputation. Suddenly, the steps outside his home became impossible to manage. That December, a team of SAWs volunteers installed a custom-built ramp at his home, giving him safe and reliable access to the outside world. When he underwent a second amputation in the summer of 2020, the ramp’s importance grew even more vital.
“Mil truly embodies the spirit of service that SAWs represents.” — Cynthia Park, SAWs Client Service Coordinator
Mil’s sons—both working in construction—helped build his ramp alongside the SAWs crew, making it a meaningful family moment. Today, the ramp remains a symbol of connection, independence, and dignity for Mil and his loved ones “It’s been incredibly rewarding to collaborate with someone who not only commits to making a difference but genuinely cares about the people around him,” Cynthia adds. “He’s not just a valued teammate—he’s become a friend as well.”
At the 2022 Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, Mil addressed a room full of ramp builders, sharing his story with heartfelt gratitude. His message centered around three simple but powerful words: Blessed. Honored. Freedom.
Blessed by the kindness and skill of the volunteers who gave him access to the world again
Honored to represent SAWs clients and personally thank those who make this work possible
Freedom for himself and for his family to live more fully, without physical barriers standing in the way
Inspired by the impact of his ramp, Mil now volunteers with SAWs, helping new clients begin their own journey to independence. As a Client Services Representative, he listens, encourages, and walks applicants through the ramp request process—bringing his warmth and understanding to those facing the same challenges he once did. “One of the things I appreciate most about Mil is the way he brings not only skill and heart to his work, but also a sense of camaraderie and

fun,” Cynthia shares. “Our shared love of sports—especially IU and the Pacers—has led to many memorable conversations and light-hearted debates that make the workday that much more enjoyable.”
Mil’s story is a full-circle testament to what SAWs is all about: building freedom, one ramp at a time—and sometimes, one volunteer at a time too.
